Meditate on verses 1-2a.
The Spirit of the LORD GOD is upon
me because the LORD has anointed
me to bring good news to the afflicted;
He has sent me to bind up the
brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to
captives and freedom to prisoners, to
proclaim the favorable year of the LORD
and the day of vengeance of our God.
This chapter is filled with good news. The day of the LORD, the day of God’s vengeance, is a great day for those who belong to Him. It is a day when God turns hopeless situations into victories: freedom for prisoners, comfort for those who mourn, rising up from former devastations, a double portion replacing shame and humiliation, everlasting joy… (vs. 1-7).
What does the day of the LORD hold for you and those you love? Will it be a day of mourning or a day of rejoicing?
As a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7), pray Isaiah 61:3 and 10 over those who need Jesus as their LORD and Savior.
“LORD, grant comfort to __________ who is mourning.
Give them a garland instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle
of praise instead of a spirit of fainting.
Let them be called ‘oaks of righteousness,’ the
planting of the LORD, that You may be
glorified. Let them rejoice greatly in You, LORD.
Let their soul exult in You, my God.
Clothe them with garments of salvation.
Wrap them with Your robe of righteousness, as
a bridegroom decks himself with a garland,
and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
In Your name, Jesus~”
