Meditate on verse 9.
When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha,
“Ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you.”
And Elisha said, “Please, let a double portion
of your spirit be upon me.”
Elisha was appointed and anointed by God to be Elijah’s successor as a prophet of the LORD (1 Kings 19:16). As the time approached for Elijah to be taken up to heaven, Elisha refused to leave him, wanting to soak up every moment with this great man of God. The last thing Elisha requested of Elijah was to receive a double portion of his spirit, which of course was controlled and empowered by God’s Spirit. God granted his request, and Elisha was immediately able to do great things in the LORD’s name and for His glory (vs. 14-15).
What is your attitude about being with Jesus? Cry out to Him, “As You live, LORD, I will not leave You!”
So Jesus said to the twelve, “You do not want to go away also, do you?”
Simon Peter answered Him, “LORD, to whom shall we go?
You have words of eternal life.”
—John 6:67-68
Use the words from 2 Kings 2:9 and 21 to pray over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, please let a double portion of Your Spirit
be upon __________ and me.
Purify us, LORD, with the living
water of Your Spirit (John 7:38-39).
Let there no longer be death
or unfruitfulness in us.
For the sake of Your name, Jesus~”
