Meditate on verse 3.
He walked in all the sins of his father, which
he had committed before him, and his heart
was not wholly devoted to the LORD his God
like the heart of his father David.
What a horrible epitaph! Abijam, king of Judah, lived his life committing all the sins of his father, King Rehoboam, because he did not have a heart completely devoted to God. After reigning for three years, his son Asa became king of Judah (v. 9). He was described as doing “what was right in the sight of the LORD” (v. 11).
You are also introduced to two kings of Israel in this chapter: Nadab, the son of King Jeroboam, and Baasha, who killed Nadab and all of Jeroboam’s family (vs. 25-29). Both kings were described as doing “evil in the sight of the LORD” (vs. 26, 34).
The LORD wants these stories to be much more than history lessons. Pay careful attention to the actions and attitudes of these kings of Israel and Judah, noticing God’s actions and attitudes toward them. As you read, ask the LORD to keep you and your loved ones from walking in the sins these men committed that made the LORD so angry.
Use the words from 1 Kings 15:3 and 11 to pray over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, do not let _________ and me walk
in any of the sins of our fathers
which they committed! Let our hearts
be wholly devoted to You, LORD.
Let us do what is right in Your sight.
For the sake of Your name, LORD Jesus~”
