Meditate on verses 7-10a.
Go, say to Jeroboam, 'Thus says the LORD God of Israel,
‘…you have not been like My servant David,
who kept My commandments and who
followed Me with all his heart, to do only
that which was right in My sight; you also have done more
evil than all who were before you… and have cast
Me behind your back— therefore behold, I am bringing
calamity on the house of Jeroboam.’”
Jeroboam, king of the ten northern tribes, called Israel, sinned against God, casting Him behind his back. God destroyed Jeroboam and his family.
Rehoboam, king of Judah (the southern tribes of Judah and Benjamin), committed the abominations of the world instead of pleasing God (vs. 21- 24). The King of Egypt attacked and continually warred with Rehoboam (vs. 25-30).
As you read 1 and 2 Kings, observe how God hates and does not tolerate sin. Learn from these kings of Judah and Israel; sin brings war to your soul and impacts everyone around you. But, remember, if you are a Christian, you have the heart of Christ to keep God’s commandments, follow Him, and do what is right in His sight.
Pray 1 Kings 14:8-9 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, make ________ and me like Your servant
David and like You, LORD Jesus Christ, to keep
Your commandments and follow You with all our
hearts, to do only that which is right in Your sight.
Let us do no evil. Do not let us make for ourselves
other gods to provoke You to anger.
Do not let us cast You behind our backs.
Because of Your name, Jesus~”
