Meditate on verse 3.
Ahab called Obadiah who was over the household.
Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly.
Three years of severe famine passed between 1 Kings 17:1 and 1 Kings 18:1, when God told Elijah to return to evil King Ahab. He was met by Obadiah, a God-fearing man who risked his life doing great exploits for the LORD despite being the servant of two of the most notorious monarchs in Israel’s history, King Ahab and Queen Jezebel (vs. 3-16). Obadiah described himself as fearing the LORD from his youth (v. 12).
What a difference it makes when a person learns and chooses to fear God rather than man from the time they are young! Obadiah knew he could be killed for telling Ahab he had seen Elijah, yet he trusted God and obeyed the prophet.
What is the LORD asking you to do? Out of awe, reverence, and holy fear of God, are you obeying Him? Does fear of what others might think or how they might react keep you from wholeheartedly following the LORD? “If the LORD is God, follow Him” (v. 21)!
As a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7), use the words from 1 Kings 18:3, 12, and 21 to pray for yourself and those you love to be like Obadiah.
“LORD, may ________ and I fear You greatly.
Let _________ fear You from their youth.
Do not let us hesitate between two opinions.
LORD, You are God; we will follow You.
In Your name, Jesus~”
