1 Kings 13 - Praying God's Word

Please read 1 Kings 13.

Meditate on verses 16-18.

He said, “I cannot return with you, nor go with you,
nor will I eat bread or drink water with you in this place.
For a command came to me by the word of the LORD,
 “You shall eat no bread, nor drink water there;
do not return by going the way which you came.”
He said to him, “I also am a prophet like you,
and an angel spoke to me by the word of the
LORD, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house
that he may eat bread and drink water.’”
 But he lied to him.

What a powerful and timely story about obeying the Word of the LORD and not being deceived by false prophets!
The man of God was given specific instructions from God about what to do and where to go. He passed the first test and did not give in to the temptation to go home with King Jeroboam (vs. 7-9). The man of God, however, failed the second test and believed the self-proclaimed prophet who declared an angel spoke to him a word from the LORD (v. 18). Instead of standing firm on God’s Word, the man of God obeyed the false prophet. The result—God killed him (v. 26).
Do not be tempted to take God’s Word lightly and turn from it to fulfill your sinful desires. Do not be tempted to believe a self-declared prophet who proclaims a word contrary to God’s Word (Galatians 1:8-9; 1 John 4:1).
Use 1 Kings 13:17 to pray to be obedient to the Word of the LORD.

“LORD, the command has come to _______ and me by Your Word:
‘You shall…’
Help us to obey completely.
In Your name, Jesus~”
