Meditate on verse 23.
So, they and their sons had charge
of the gates of the house
of the LORD, even the house
of the tent, as guards.
What a privilege to be a Levite trusted to keep watch over the house of the LORD! Nothing was allowed into the temple that did not belong there. Anything and anyone who could defile God’s house were faithfully kept out day and night.
The spiritual applications from this genealogy scream off the page. God wants you to guard yourself and those you love. Keep the trusted watch God has given you for your family, not allowing anyone or anything into your home, even via electronic media, that would defile you and your loved ones. Faithfully stand guard at the threshold of your church—do not allow false teaching to creep in that corrupts the body of Christ. Pray day and night for God to keep you and yours from evil (2 Thessalonians 3:3).
Use the words from 1 Chronicles 9:19, 21, 23 and 26-27 to pray over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, _________ and I will be keepers of the
thresholds of Your tent. Let us be over Your
camp, LORD, keepers of the entrance. Make
us gatekeepers of the entrance of the tent
of meeting. Let us and our children have charge
of the gates of Your house, LORD. Let us serve as
guards of Your truth. Keep us faithful in
this office of trust. We will spend the night around
Your house, God, because the watch has been
committed to us. We will be in charge of opening Your house
morning by morning so others can know You.
