Meditate on verse 13.
And Beriah and Shema, who were
heads of fathers' households
of the inhabitants of Aijalon, who
put to flight the inhabitants of Gath.
Think about Beriah and Shema. These two men are in a chapter containing more than 120 names; most have no more of a descriptor than a comma after their name. But, in the middle of the name comma name comma list, are Beriah and Shema, who will forever be remembered for “putting to flight the inhabitants of Gath” (v. 13).
Gath was one of five royal cities of the Philistines and the native city of the giant, Goliath (1 Samuel 17:4, 23). Beriah and Shema drove out those who dwelled in a city renowned for giants and idolatry (1 Samuel 6:17-18; 2 Samuel 21:20-22). Now their names are renowned by God because they did so.
Ask God to make you and your family like Beriah and Shema, not afraid of the giants. Drive out the giants, those things that keep you from walking whole-heartedly with God. With God’s help, drive them out of your home, workplace, school, church, etc.
Pray 1 Chronicles 8:13 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, make __________ and me like
Beriah and Shema, heads of our
households who put to flight the inhabitants
of what keeps us from You.
LORD, give us the courage to remove the giants.
In Your all-powerful name, Jesus~”
