Meditate on verses 2b.
Thus says the LORD, "Woe, shepherds of Israel
who have been feeding themselves!
Should not the shepherds feed the flock?”
The LORD told Ezekiel to prophesy against the shepherds, the priests and leaders of Israel, who did not take care of the flock of God. The people were lost sheep because their shepherds did not feed and watch over them. The LORD promised to gather the flock and care for them. Christ, the Great Shepherd, came for the sake of his sheep (Hebrews 13:20). He commissioned His disciple Peter to help feed and shepherd them (John 21:15-17). Peter then told all Christian leaders to “shepherd the flock of God among you” (1 Peter 5:2).
So, this chapter from Ezekiel applies to you. As a Christian, God has given you at least one, possibly many, lambs and sheep to feed and shepherd. Your flock might be your family, life group, friends, congregation, or coworkers. The LORD expects you to shepherd the flock until He, the Chief Shepherd, returns (1 Peter 5:4).
Ask God to make you a good shepherd by praying not to be like the shepherds described in Ezekiel 34:2 and 4.
“LORD, make _________ and me shepherds who
do not feed ourselves instead of feeding the flock.
Help us to strengthen the sickly, heal the diseased,
bind up the broken, bring back the scattered,
and seek the lost. Do not let us dominate them
with force and severity. Help us to feed them Your Word.
For the sake of Your name, Great Shepherd Jesus Christ~”
