Meditate on verses 10-11.
Therefore thus says the LORD GOD, "Because it is high
in stature and has set its top among the clouds,
and its heart is haughty in its loftiness;
therefore, I will give it into the hand of a despot of the nations;
he will thoroughly deal with it.
According to its wickedness, I have driven it away.
God forewarned the prideful Egyptians of their coming destruction with a story about Assyria. He compared Assyria to a most amazing cedar of Lebanon whose beauty came from God (vs. 3-9). And while the LORD caused the cedar to grow toward the heavens, the cedar’s heart grew haughty, so the LORD felled it (vs. 10-12). God used the Babylonians to humble and destroy the mighty Assyrians, and He promised the Egyptians He would do the same to them.
Pride goes before destruction,
and a haughty spirit before stumbling.
and a haughty spirit before stumbling.
—Proverbs 16:18
Heed God’s warnings. Do not think you are in such a high position that it is impossible to be brought down. Commit to walk humbly with your God, recognizing it is He who makes your life beautiful (v. 9).
Pray for the LORD not to have to do verses 10-11 in your life and the lives of those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, do not let _________ and me become high in stature
and set our tops among the clouds.
Do not let our hearts be haughty in loftiness,
so You do not have to give us into the hands
of despots to thoroughly deal with us.
Keep us from wickedness, so
You do not need to drive us away.
For the sake of Your name, Jesus~”
