Meditate on Jesus’ command in verse 41.
Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into
temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Jesus’ command to keep watching and praying came just as chaos was about to rain down on His disciples. As they watched one of their own betray their beloved Master with a kiss, a huge crowd, 600 Roman soldiers, plus officers and Pharisees from the temple, descended into their quiet prayer garden (John 18:1-3). Swords drawn; torches blazing; clubs ready for beating; an ear sliced—the disciples were in the fog of war, and they did not do well—they all left Jesus and fled (v. 56).
Heed Jesus’ command to keep watching and praying, for the winds of life can quickly become a hurricane. Be prepared with God’s Word, prayer, and the power of the Holy Spirit.
Pray Matthew 26:38-39 and 41-42 over desperate situations as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, my soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death.
I will remain here and keep watch with You, Jesus.
As I fall on my face and pray, Father, if it is
possible, let this cup pass from Me, yet not
as I will, but as You will. Help me keep watching and praying
that I may not enter into temptation. LORD, my spirit is
willing, but my flesh is weak. My Father, if this cannot pass away
unless I drink it, Your will be done.
In Your name, Jesus~”
