Matthew 15 - Praying God's Word

Please read Matthew 15.

Meditate on verses 10-11.

After Jesus called the crowd to Him, He said

to them, "Hear and understand.  It is not what enters

into the mouth that defiles the man, but what

proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man."

After reading what Jesus commanded us to hear and understand, do you feel like Peter, saying, “LORD, I don’t get it” (v. 15)?  “Oh, LORD, help me understand!”

The Pharisees came to Jesus all concerned about his disciples not washing their hands before eating.  Jesus pointed out to these rule followers they should be more concerned about dishonoring words to their parents, such as, “Whatever I have that would help you has been given to God,” than a few germs going into his disciples’ bellies (v. 5).  What goes into our mouths will eventually be eliminated; what comes out of our mouths is evidence of what is in our hearts and has eternal impacts.  “Oh, LORD, cleanse my filthy heart and set a guard over my mouth!”

Hear and understand Jesus’ words.  Ask Him to reveal your heart issues, heal your heart, and make it a heart of compassion like His (v. 32).

Pray Matthew 15:10-11, 22, 25, and 32 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“LORD, help _________ and me hear and understand.

Do not let anything come out of our mouths

that would defile others and ourselves.

Have mercy on us, LORD, Son of David!  LORD, help us!

Help us feel compassion for people like You do.

In Your name, Jesus~”
