Meditate on Jesus’ commands in verses 3-6 and 10.
Convert and become like children.
Humble yourself as this child.
Receive one such child in My name.
Do not cause one of these little ones
who believes in Me to stumble.
Do not despise one of these little ones.

Interestingly, Jesus gave these commands in answer to the disciples’ question: “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” (v. 1). These followers of Christ often concerned themselves with greatness (v. 1; Mark 9:33-37; Luke 9:46-48; 22:24). Jesus taught that humbling oneself as a little child, being last and a servant of all, was truly great in God’s eyes (v. 4; Mark 9:35). And Jesus lived what He taught, receiving and teaching these grown men who were still so childlike in their understanding of God and His ways rather than despising them for their prideful selfishness. And, Jesus, the constant servant leader, washed their feet the night before He offered Himself in total humility as the sacrifice for their sins and ours (John 13:1-17).
When you are overcome with the desire for greatness, remember our LORD’s commands, praying them over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7). Pray Matthew 18:3-6 and 10.
“LORD, I had to convert and become like a
child in order to enter the kingdom of heaven.
Please let __________ convert and become like
a child before it is too late. Help me humble
myself as Your child. Help me receive Your
children in Your name. Do not let me cause little
ones who believe in You to stumble. Help
me not despise any of Your little ones.
For the sake of Your name, Jesus~”
