Meditate on verses 26b-28. Jesus is speaking.
"Whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; just
as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,
and to give His life a ransom for many."
This chapter begins with a landowner hiring people to work his vineyard throughout the day. He ends up paying them all the same, whether they started early in the morning or late in the evening. There was a lot of complaining about unfair wages, but the workers were basically told to stop whining; the landowner had the right to pay whomever whatever he wanted. And then, Jesus speaks the sobering meditation verses, giving the command to serve others as a slave, just like He did, giving up His own life. Well, serving as a slave means we may not receive any compensation because slaves aren’t wage earners. They belong to the master, and they do his bidding without expecting anything in return.
So you too, when you do all the things
which are commanded you, say,
“We are unworthy slaves; we have done
only that which we ought to have done.”
—Luke 17:10
Ponder what it really means to obey and serve Christ and pray Matthew 20:28, 30-31, and 33-34 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, You did not come to be
served, but to serve, and
to give Your life as a ransom for many.
LORD, Son of David, have
mercy on ___________ and me!
LORD, Son of David, have mercy on us!
LORD, we want our eyes to be opened.
Help us regain our sight for what
it really means to follow You.
Because we are Your servants, Jesus~”
