Meditate on verses 18-19 and 43. Jesus is speaking.
Now in the morning, when He was returning
to the city, He became hungry. Seeing a lone fig tree
by the road, He came to it and found nothing on
it except leaves only; and He said to it, "No longer
shall there ever be any fruit from you."
And at once the fig tree withered.
"Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will
be taken away from you and given to a
people, producing the fruit of it.”
Jesus takes seriously His command to produce fruit. He had no patience with the fruitless fig tree nor the fruitless religious leaders. Hear His words about fruit bearing from the book of John:
"I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every
branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away;
and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes
it so that it may bear more fruit.
—John 15:1-2
Matthew 21 ends with disobedient religious people, but it begins with an obedient donkey. Under the control of the Master, this unbroken colt maneuvered through crowded streets with people cheering and tossing cloaks and palm branches in front of its face (vs. 2-8). The Master does the same with us as we submit our lives to Him, obeying His slightest touch and bidding. Abide in Christ; let Him produce the miraculous fruit of His kingdom through you.
Pray Matthew 21:6 and 43 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, help __________ and me go and
do just as You instruct us.
You have given us the kingdom of God;
help us produce the fruit of it.
In Your name, Jesus~”
