Meditate on verse 20.
My son, observe the commandment of your father
and do not forsake the teaching of your mother.
Pray Proverbs 6 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, do not ________ and me become surety for a neighbor,
nor give a pledge for a stranger.
Do not let us be snared and caught with the words of our mouth.
As we humble ourselves, deliver us, LORD.
Do not let us be sluggards. Make us wise.
Keep us from the worthless, wicked person
who walks with a perverse mouth, winks with his eyes,
signals with his feet, and points with his fingers.
Keep us from one who with perversity in his heart
continually devises evil and spreads strife
because his calamity will come suddenly;
instantly he will be broken, and there will be no healing.
LORD, keep us from the six things which You hate;
yes, from the seven which are an abomination to You:
haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked plans,
feet that run rapidly to evil,
a false witness who utters lies,
and one who spreads strife among brothers.
LORD, let us and our children observe the
commandments of our fathers
and not forsake the teaching of our mothers.
Let us bind them continually on our hearts
and tie them around our necks. When we walk about,
let them guide us; when we sleep, let them watch over us;
when we awake, let them talk to us.
For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching is light;
and reproofs for discipline are the way of life
to keep us from the evil woman,
from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.
Do not let us desire her beauty in our hearts,
nor let her capture us with her eyelids.
For on account of a harlot, one is reduced
to a loaf of bread, and an adulteress hunts for the precious life.
Do not let us take fire in our bosom
and our clothes be burned. Do not let us walk on hot coals
and our feet be scorched. Do not let us go
in to our neighbor’s wife; we do not want to be punished.
Do not let us be thieves. Do not let us lack
sense and destroy ourselves by committing adultery;
we do not want such wounds, disgrace,
and reproach that will not be blotted out.
In Your name, Jesus~”
