Obadiah 1 - Praying God's Word

Please read Obadiah 1.

Meditate on verses 1a and 3a.

The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the

LORD GOD concerning Edom—

"The arrogance of your heart has deceived you.”

Edom is another name for Esau, the twin brother of Jacob, who is also called Israel (Genesis 25:21-30; 32:28).  The brothers’ relationship was contentious, even in the womb, and Esau’s attitude toward his brother trickled down to his descendants, so much so, God pronounces judgement on the Edomites approximately 1,200 years after Jacob and Esau were alive.

The heart of Edom’s issues is their pride (v. 3).  Pride made the Edomites violent toward Israel (v. 10).  They gloat and rejoice when bad things happen to Israel (vs. 12-13).

Their haughty attitude infuriates God, and He pronounces judgment on their head for what they have done (v. 15).

Arrogance, violence, gloating, snubbing, boasting—does the Holy Spirit convict your heart of any of those charges like He does mine?  “Oh, LORD, let me see with Your eyes and hear with Your ears the things I say and do.  Please forgive me and make me more and more like You.”

Use the words from Obadiah 1:3, 10-13, 15, and 18 to pray over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“LORD, the arrogance of ____________ and my heart

has deceived us.  In the loftiness of our dwelling place, You

will bring us down to earth.  LORD, forgive our arrogance,

violence, haughtiness, gloating, and boasting.  Remove them

from our lives, so You do not have to return them on our heads.

Be the fire and the flame that burns sin from our lives.

In Your name, Jesus~”
