Meditate on verse 2.
A jealous and avenging God is the LORD;
the LORD is avenging and wrathful.
The LORD takes vengeance on His adversaries,
and He reserves wrath for His enemies.
Were there things in this chapter that surprised you about God? These truths are important to remember. People enjoy talking about the love and mercy of God, but His jealousy and wrath are often shunned with words like, “Well, the god I worship isn’t vengeful.” Know with Biblical certainty the one who says those words does not know God.
You have God’s Word, so you are privileged to know the LORD. Tell Him that you know Him by praying Nahum 1:2-7 and 14b as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, You are a jealous and avenging God.
You are avenging and wrathful.
You take vengeance on Your adversaries,
and You reserve wrath for Your enemies.
LORD, You are slow to anger and great in power,
and You will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.
In whirlwind and storm is Your way,
and clouds are the dust beneath Your feet.
You rebuke the sea and make it dry.
You dry up all the rivers.
Mountains quake because of You, and the hills dissolve;
indeed, the earth is upheaved by Your presence,
the world and all the inhabitants in it.
Who can stand before Your indignation?
Who can endure the burning of Your anger?
Your wrath is poured out like fire,
and the rocks are broken up by You.
LORD, You are good, a stronghold in the day of trouble,
and You know those who take refuge in You.
LORD, You are my stronghold; I take refuge in You.
Please let __________ stop being contemptible and turn to You.
In Your name, Jesus~”
