Meditate on verses 5-7.
Therefore, it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath,
but also for conscience’ sake. For because of this you also pay taxes,
for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing.
Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due;
custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.
A friend of ours was told by a high-level official in a large secular country that the Christians are the best citizens in their land. They pay their taxes, contribute to the betterment of their communities, and are very law- abiding. However, the government is officially opposed to Christianity. The believers in this country are loyal to their government. They submit to authority and only appeal to a Higher Authority when they have to based on God’s standards. These Christians are ministering with their integrity by obeying the principles laid out in Romans 13.
Most of you are living in countries, provinces, states, and cities with varying levels of good governance. Some of you are in desperate situations, living in ungoverned territory or fleeing for your life. Pray for God’s governance, being a good witness and trusting Him with your circumstances.
Pray Romans 13:5 and 7-8 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, help _______and me be in subjection to our government,
paying our taxes, customs, respect, and honor.
Help us owe nothing to anyone except to love one another,
for in loving our neighbors, we have fulfilled the law.
For the sake of Your name, Jesus ~”
