Meditate on verses 2 and 6.
And the people blessed all the men who
volunteered to live in Jerusalem.
All the sons of Perez who lived
in Jerusalem were 468 able men.
Jerusalem and the temple needed special care, and those who volunteered for the task could not be weak and faint-hearted. The Hebrew word translated as “able” in the meditation verses also means “strong, virtuous, powerful, efficient, wealthy, mighty, and especially warlike.”1 These volunteers were strong in the LORD and had the wherewithal to leave their homes in other parts of Israel to serve God in Jerusalem.
We hope these verses stir your heart to pray for your family to serve God well in the places He calls you to live, willing to go anywhere for the sake of His Kingdom. Use the words from Nehemiah 11:6, 12, 16-17, 19, and 21-22 to pray over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, make _________ and me able to do everything
You want us to do. Let us perform the work of Your temple.
Give us the ability to be in charge of the outside
work of Your house, God. Make us leaders
in beginning the thanksgiving at prayer.
Help us keep watch at the gates.
Make us Your temple servants.
Let us sing for the service of Your house, O God.
For the sake of Your name, Jesus~”
