Meditate on verse 2.
He did right in the sight of the LORD,
yet not with a whole heart.
Well, from the meditation verse, you could probably guess the course of King Amaziah’s life. Pride and idolatry result from not walking wholeheartedly with the LORD, and King Amaziah was no exception. He started well, heeding God’s word not to use the Israelite army to help battle the sons of Seir, but after God gave Amaziah the victory, he brought their idols back to Jerusalem and worshipped them (vs. 7-14). Of course, God was furious, and Amaziah did not repent, so God did not relent from bringing calamity to Amaziah and the people of Judah (vs. 15-28). Tragic!
Take the story of King Amaziah to heart, for this chapter is filled with practical spiritual applications for our lives. For example, if you have already committed money to do something you know is out of God’s will, do not worry about the money; do what is right, for the LORD has much more to give you than that money can buy (v. 9). Determine to do what pleases God with a whole heart. Ask Him to help you not become full of yourself and fall into a pride trap like Amaziah did (vs. 10-14).
Use the words from 2 Chronicles 25:2 and 19 to pray over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, please let ___________ and me do
right in Your sight with a whole heart.
Do not let our hearts become proud
in boasting. Do not let us do anything that would
provoke trouble, causing us and others to fall.
For the sake of Your name, Jesus~”
