2 Chronicles 24 - Praying God's Word

Please read 2 Chronicles 24.

Meditate on verse 2.

Joash did what was right in the sight of the

LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

What a profoundly foreshadowing verse!  You could probably guess what was going to happen to King Joash after his mentor Jehoiada died before even reading the text.  But, you were probably shocked by how horribly he behaved as you read the entire chapter.  Joash, whose life was saved by his Aunt Jehoshabeath and mentored by her husband, Jehoiada, murdered their son, Zechariah (2 Chronicles 22:10-12; 24:20-22).  How can one go from doing what is right in the sight of the LORD to committing murder?  Joash’s relationship with God was really more of a relationship with Jehoiada.  He was a follower of his priest instead of a follower of the LORD.  Then, when his priest and mentor died, Joash was easily persuaded to abandon God with disastrous results (vs. 17-18).

Beware of becoming a follower of a human instead of a follower of Christ, for when that person dies or loses our esteem, our foundation is rocked because it was not built on Christ and His Word.  Spend time searching your soul to see if you are anchored to Christ or if you are anchored to a pastor, teacher, mentor, relative, etc.  People come and go; they rise and fall; they are not God.  Pray to do what is right in the sight of the LORD all the days of your life because Jesus is your “great high priest” forever (Hebrews 4:14; 7:24).

Pray 2 Chronicles 24:2 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“LORD, please help ___________ and me do what is

right in Your sight all the days of our lives.

Because You are our priest, Jesus~”
