Meditate on verse 12.
But where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?
When Job lost everything, it put him in the position to see what really matters. More important than obtaining precious jewels and metals is obtaining wisdom. People can mine silver and gold (v. 1). They can extract iron, copper, and sapphires from rocks (vs. 2, 6). But, where can a person obtain wisdom? Acquiring wisdom is more desirable than owning topaz and pearls, and all the gold in the world cannot buy it (v. 15, 18-19). By the end of the chapter, Job had the answer to his questions:
· Where can wisdom be found?
“The fear of God is wisdom” (v. 28).
· Where is the place of understanding?
“To depart from evil is understanding” (v. 28).
The LORD used Job’s suffering to give him something more precious than gold: God’s wisdom and understanding. That is God’s purpose for us in the midst of our trials—to give us the opportunity to obtain His wisdom and understanding.
Thank the LORD for the trials and pray Job 28:23-28 as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD God, You understand the way of wisdom, and
You know its place. You look to the ends of the earth
and see everything under the heavens.
You imparted weight to the wind and meted
out the waters by measure.
You set a limit to the rain and a course
for the thunderbolt. You saw wisdom and declared it.
You established wisdom and searched it out.
LORD, let __________ and me fear You, for that is wisdom.
Let us depart from evil, for that is understanding.
In Your name, Jesus~”
