Deuteronomy 4 - Praying God's Word

Please read Deuteronomy 4.

Meditate on verses 15-16a.

So watch yourselves carefully, since you did not see any

form on the day the LORD spoke to you at Horeb from

the midst of the fire, so that you do not act corruptly

and make a graven image for yourselves in the form of any figure.

Why did God not bodily reveal Himself nor show His face in the Old Testament?  And why is He so adamantly opposed to graven images?  Because Jesus is “the image of the invisible God,” and “the knowledge of the glory of God is in the face of Christ” (Colossians 1:15; 2 Corinthians 4:6).  Jesus, God in the flesh, is the only image of the Almighty.  Humans are incapable of making an image of God and any attempt to do so misrepresents Him.

Fix your eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2) and pray Deuteronomy 4:4-6, 9, and 23 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“LORD our God, let ________ and me hold fast to You.

Let us keep and do Your statutes and judgments,

for that is our wisdom and understanding.

Make us wise and understanding people.

Help us give heed to ourselves and keep our

souls diligently so that we do not forget the things which

our eyes have seen, and those things do not depart from our

hearts all the days of our lives, but let us make them known to

our children and grandchildren.  Let us watch ourselves that

we do not forget Your covenant, LORD our God.  Do not let us

make a graven image in the form of anything against You.

In Your name, Jesus~”
