Meditate on verse 1.
Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after
year;
and David sought the presence of
the LORD. And the LORD said,
“It is for Saul and his bloody house, because he put the Gibeonites to
death.”
This is a chapter about real life—dealing with
mistakes from the past, dealing with the sins of others, and dealing with
giants. David dealt with life by seeking the presence of the LORD. God
explained to him the reason for the famine; it was punishment for Saul breaking
a 400 year-old covenant with the Gibeonites (Joshua 9:1-10:21). Based on God’s
commands (Numbers 35:33-34), David avenged the blood of the Gibeonites and
properly buried the dead. “After that God was moved by prayer for the land” (v.
14).
Christmas is the perfect time to seek the LORD’s
presence, asking Him to reveal to you and your family mistakes from the past and
sins that need to be forgiven. Perhaps the best gift you could give is a
written or spoken message to one who needs you to forgive them for sinning
against you. The gracious gift of forgiveness topples giants just like Jesus’
forgiveness toppled giants in your life.
Use the words from 2 Samuel 21:1, 14, 16, and 22 to pray
over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful
watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, I seek Your presence for my family.
Please be moved by prayer for us.
This giant intends to kill us. Let me kill the giant.
By Your hand, Jesus~”
