Please read Proverbs 9
Meditate on verses 6 and 8b-10.
Forsake your folly and live, and proceed in the way of understanding.
Reprove a wise man, and he will love you.
Give instruction to a wise man,
and he will be still wiser.
Teach a righteous man, and he will increase his learning.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Wisdom is
seen as having an established mansion with seven sculptured pillars. She has
prepared food, wine, and set her table. She has sent out her servants to call
all to come. She calls for the naive and for those who lack understanding to
come to her home and sit at her table.
She offers a
new life that requires forsaking folly. She promises a new way of
understanding. That way of wisdom begins with the fear of the LORD, and
understanding is described as having knowledge of the Holy One. Those who
acquire this understanding have days and years added to their lives. It is a
beautiful picture of the LORD’s purposeful and sacrificial search and desire
for you!
There is a
powerful contrast in Proverbs 9:12-18. The man who thinks he is wise, the
scoffer, and the woman of folly are on the path of death. Like wisdom, the
woman of folly calls out for all to enter her home on the high places of the
city. She wants the naive and ones who lack understanding to come to her home.
Death and the depths of hell await her guests.
Pray Proverbs 9:5-6, 8b-10 over yourself and those for whom
you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, thank You for Your invitation
to eat Your food and drink Your wine.
Help ______ and me forsake folly and live.
Let us proceed in the way of understanding.
Help us to receive reproof as a wise person and love the reprovers.
May we give instruction and grow wiser in it.
Let us be righteous people who are taught and increase in learning.
Help us to fear You, Lord, so we can understand Your wisdom.
Let us understand You, Holy One, by knowing You
In Your name, Jesus~”
