Proverbs 11 - Praying God's Word

Please read Proverbs 11.

Meditate on verses 16a, 22, 25-26, and 30.

A gracious woman attains honor.

As a ring of gold in a swine’s snout,

 so is a beautiful woman who lacks discretion.

The generous man will be prosperous,

and he who waters will himself be watered

He who withholds grain, the people will curse him,

but blessing will be on the head of him who sells it.

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life,

 and he who is wise wins souls.

These meditation verses may appear disconnected. Prayerfully study them again and see what the LORD lays on your heart.

In 1930, my great-grandfather was a poor farmer in West Texas. He loved the LORD and was known for his generosity. He had 13 children of his own and also reared a large group of children from his deceased brother’s family. A drought came to the land, and soon people no longer had water on their farms. Grandfather had a deep pond and invited all who needed water to get their water from him. As his water supply grew lower, one by one, families left him his remaining water and made the 10-mile wagon ride to get water from the nearest city. Soon there was only one other family getting water from Grandfather’s pond. As the pond dried up, the young father of that family said he would get water in the city. Grandfather invited him to share the last of his water with him—and so the pond was dry ... until that afternoon, when an isolated thunderstorm completely refilled the pond, only this generous man’s pond. The young father, who was not a believer at the time of the drought, told this story of generosity and the miracle that followed for the rest of his life.

The person who trusts in the LORD for everything, a gracious woman compared to a woman whose beauty demands discretion, a person who is generous and shares water and grain rather than hoarding for themselves, a person who seeks and lives for eternal virtues rather than wicked, selfish, or foolish values is to be honored because in the end he or she is wise—winning souls and the LORD’s favor.

Pray Proverbs 11:16-17, 25, and 30 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“LORD, make ______ and me gracious, attaining honor.

Make us merciful, doing good.

As we are generous, may we prosper.

As we water, keep us watered.

May our fruit of righteousness be a tree of life.

Make us wise, winning souls.
