Psalm 87 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 87.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/87/1/s_565001
Meditate on verses 2 and 6.

The LORD loves the gates of Zion more than all the other dwelling places of Jacob.
The LORD will count when He registers the peoples, “This one was born there.”

Zion was the southwestern hill of Jerusalem where David built his palace; it became the “city of David1.” The LORD loves Zion and calls it the “city of God” (vs. 2-3). Everyone born in Zion is counted and registered by the LORD Himself (vs. 5-6).
As a Christian, “you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem” (Hebrews 12:22). And this is what Jesus says about you:
“He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God,
and he will not go out from it anymore; and I will write on him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem,
which comes down out of heaven from My God, and My new name.”
 —Revelation 3:12

Through Jesus Christ, you are born into the city of God. The LORD counts and registers you as a citizen of His household (Ephesians 2:19). Amazing!
Pray Psalm 87:6 over those who need to be born into the city of God. Pray Psalm 87:7 in thanksgiving for your permanent residence there.
“LORD, cause ________ to be born into You,
so when You count and register the peoples, You will say of them,
‘This one was born there.’ LORD, all my springs of joy are in You.
Because of Your name, Jesus~”

Psalm 86 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 86.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/86/1/s_564001
Meditate on verse 1.

Incline Your ear, O LORD, and answer me;
for I am afflicted and needy.

Psalm 86 is a prayer of David. Perhaps you want to write your name next to David’s in your Bible and make it your prayer, too.
David was afflicted and needy, and he wanted God to help him. Observe David’s prayer requests, and make them your own:
·      Preserve my soul (v. 2).

·      Be gracious to me (v. 3).

·      Make my soul glad (v. 4).
·      Give ear to my prayer (v. 6).

·      Give heed to my supplications (v. 6).
·      Teach me Your way (v. 11).
·      Let me walk in Your truth (v. 11).

·      Unite my heart to fear Your name (v. 11).
·      Turn to me (v. 16).
·      Grant me Your strength (v. 16).
·      Save me (v. 16).

·      Show me a sign for good (v. 17).

·      Help me and comfort me (v. 17).
Reread Psalm 86, saying it as a personal prayer to your LORD.
“Incline Your ear, O LORD, and answer me; for I am afflicted and needy.
Preserve my soul, for I am a Godly person;

O You my God, save Your servant who trusts in You.

Be gracious to me, O LORD, for to You I cry all day long.
Show me a sign for good, that those who hate me may
see it and be ashamed,
because You, O LORD,
have helped me and comforted me.

In Your name, Jesus~”

Psalm 85 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 85.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/85/1/s_563001
Meditate on verse 8.

I will hear what God the LORD will say; for He will speak peace to His people,
to His Godly ones; but let them not turn back to folly.

What a wonderful psalm for faithful, prayerful watchmen! It is filled with treasure verses to pray over those you love.
·      LORD, forgive the iniquity of ________ and cover all their sin (v. 2).
·      LORD, please withdraw Your fury from ________ and turn away
from Your burning anger (v. 3).
·      Restore _________, O God of our salvation, and cause Your indignation toward them to cease (v. 4).
·      LORD, do not be angry forever with _______ (v. 5).
·      Revive ______ again, LORD (v. 6).
·      Show _______ Your lovingkindness, O LORD, and grant them Your salvation (v. 7).
·      Speak peace to ________. Make them Your Godly ones (v. 8).
·      LORD, do not let ________ turn back to folly (stupidity) (v. 8).

Armed with God’s Word, pray at least one of the above over and over someone you are guarding as their faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“LORD, do not let ________ turn back to stupidity.
LORD, do not let ________ turn back to stupidity.
LORD, do not let ________ turn back to stupidity ...
For the sake of Your name, Jesus~”

Psalm 84 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 84.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/84/1/s_562001
Meditate on verse 1.

How lovely are Your dwelling places, O LORD of hosts!
Where are God’s dwelling places?
·      He dwells in Jerusalem forever (1 Chronicles 23:25).
·      He dwells in Zion (Psalm 9:11).
·      He dwells on high (Isaiah 33:5).
·      He dwells within the temple (Matthew 23:21).
·      He dwells in unapproachable light (1 Timothy 6:16).
·      The Spirit of God dwells in you! (Romans 8:9, 11; 1 Corinthians
3:16; 2 Timothy 1:14).

The psalmist longed to be where God was. Meditate on the fact that if you are a Christian, you are always with God because He dwells inside of you. And you are lovely because you are His dwelling place. Live so others will want to be His dwelling place, too.

Pray Psalm 84:2b and 11-12 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“My heart and my flesh sing for joy to You, the living God!
LORD God, be a sun and shield to __________ and me.
Give us grace and glory;

do not withhold any good thing from us as we walk uprightly.
O LORD of hosts, bless us as we trust in You!

In Your name, Jesus~”

Psalm 83 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 83.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/83/1/s_561001
Meditate on verses 1-3.

O God, do not remain quiet; do not be silent and, O God, do not be still.
For behold, Your enemies make an uproar,
and those who hate You have exalted themselves.
They make shrewd plans against Your people
and conspire together against Your treasured ones.

Approximately 3,000 years ago, Asaph listed all the enemies who were hoping to annihilate the nation of Israel so that her name was no longer remembered (v. 4). Asaph asked God to pursue and terrify Israel’s adversaries, shaming and humiliating them (vs. 15, 17). He hoped such dishonor would cause these wicked people to seek the name of the LORD (v. 16).
God protected Israel; she is still a nation today. And interestingly, the descendants of those enemies are Israel’s current, modern day foes. They still seek the extermination of this nation loved by God, and they desire to kill Christians, who are also God’s beloved. Know with certainty, God will continue to protect Israel, and He also promises to protect you.
But the LORD is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.
—2 Thessalonians 3:3

Obey your LORD’s command to pray for your enemies (Luke 6:27-28) by appealing to Him with Psalm 83:1-3, 16, and 18 as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“O God, do not remain quiet; do not be silent and, O God, do not be still!
For behold, Your enemies make an uproar,
and those who hate You have exalted themselves.
They make shrewd plans against Your people,
and conspire together against Your treasured ones.
Do what You need to do, even filling their faces with dishonor,
that they may seek Your name, O LORD.
May they know that You alone, whose name is the LORD,
are the Most High over all the earth.
In Your Most High name, Jesus~”

Psalm 82 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 82.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/82/1/s_560001
Meditate on verses 1 and 8.

God takes His stand in His own congregation;

He judges in the midst of the rulers.
Arise, O God, judge the earth!
For it is You who possesses all the nations.

This psalm begins and ends with God judging. The verses in between address human judges, exhorting them to judge righteously and fairly. The psalmist, Asaph, reminds these judges of their sacred trust to make Godly decisions like “sons of the Most High” (v. 6). Asaph tells them not to let their godlike position to make such important decisions go to their heads because they are mere men and will die like men (v. 7).
These are important verses for those in the judiciary system. Pray for those who sit in such authoritative positions to make Godly decisions and to literally be sons of the Most High through faith in Jesus Christ (John 1:12; Galatians 3:26).
As a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7), pray Psalm 82 over judges and rulers in your land.
“LORD, judge in the midst of our rulers.
Do not let our rulers judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked.

Let them vindicate the weak and fatherless and do justice to the afflicted and destitute. Help them rescue the weak and needy.
May they deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.
Make our rulers know and understand.
Let them not walk about in darkness, so that the foundations of the earth are shaken. LORD, let them truly be sons of the Most
High, through faith in You, Jesus.

Make them realize they will die like men
and fall like any one of the princes.

Arise, O God, judge the earth!
For it is You who possesses all the nations.

Because You are the Righteous Judge, Jesus~”

Psalm 81 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 81.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/81/1/s_559001
Meditate on verse 1.

Sing for joy to God our strength;
shout joyfully to the God of Jacob.

The LORD recalled what He did for Israel:
·      “I relieved his shoulder of the burden” (v. 6).

·      ”I rescued you” (v.7).
·      ”I answered you in the hiding place of thunder” (v. 7).
The LORD goes on to admonish Israel for not listening and obeying Him. If they would walk in His ways, He “would quickly subdue their enemies” (v. 14).
What does the LORD say He has done for you? Does He have a word of admonishment for you to stop having a stubborn heart?
Recall God’s faithfulness. Commit to obey Him with your whole heart.
Pray Psalm 81:11-16 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, _________ and I are Your people.
Help us listen to and obey You.

Do not let us have a stubborn heart and walk in our own devices.
Help us listen to You and walk in Your ways!

Please quickly subdue our enemies,
and turn Your hand against our adversaries.

LORD, we love You; do not let us pretend to obey You.

We do not want our time of punishment to be forever.
Please feed us with the finest of the wheat,
and satisfy us with honey from the rock.

In Your name, Jesus~”
