Meditate on verses 55-56. The LORD is speaking.
“But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land
from before you, then it shall come about that
those whom you let remain of them will become as pricks
in your eyes and as thorns in your sides, and they will
trouble you in the land in which you live. And
as I plan to do to them, so I will do to you.”
The Israelites made forty stops in forty years before finally landing on the plains of Moab (vs. 5-48). As they prepared to enter the promised land of Canaan, the LORD gave them these instructions:
“When you cross over the Jordan into the land of Canaan, then
you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from
before you, and destroy all their figured stones,
and destroy all their molten images and demolish
all their high places; and you shall take possession
of the land and live in it, for I have given
the land to you to possess it.
—Numbers 33:51b-53
The Canaanites were idolatrous people; they and everything they worshiped had to be removed so the Israelites would not be tempted to worship their gods, practicing their sinful lifestyle.
What tempts you away from God? Remove it so you can live the plans God has for you.
Pray the opposite of Numbers 33:55 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, let ________ and me drive out sin from before us.
Let none of it remain so that it becomes as pricks
in our eyes and as thorns in our sides.
Do not let sin trouble us as we live with You, LORD.
In Your name, Jesus~”
