Psalm 8 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 8.

Meditate on verse 1.

O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth,
who have displayed Your splendor above the heavens!

Psalm 8 is a beautiful praise written by David. You may have even sung some of the words of this psalm in hymns or other worship songs. David began and ended this song of praise by acknowledging who God is. The LORD, the self-existent and eternal One, was David’s master and superior; He was LORD of David.
The LORD displayed His splendor, and David took notice. As he considered God’s creation, he was humble before the LORD. It amazed David that the LORD would take thought of him and care for him. Yet God not only cared for David and all humans, He even put people in charge of His creation. The LORD is indeed excellent, powerful, and majestic in all the earth!
Perceive and consider the LORD and what He is doing in your life and the lives of those you love. Pray Psalm 8:3-4 and 9 over yourself and them as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“LORD, help _________ and me to consider Your heavens,
the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars,
which You have ordained.
Thank You for taking thought of us.
Thank You for taking care of us.
Oh LORD, our LORD, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!
In Your name, LORD Jesus~”

Psalm 7 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 7.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/7/1/s_485001
Meditate on verse 9a.

O let the evil of the wicked come to an end,
 but establish the righteous…

Before David appealed to God for justice, he asked Him if there was any injustice within his own heart. David wanted the LORD to reveal sin in his own life first, then he requested God to judge his adversaries.
David knew this truth about God:

If a man does not repent, He will sharpen His sword;
He has bent His bow and made it ready.  He has also prepared for Himself
deadly weapons; He makes His arrows fiery shafts.
—Psalm 7:12-13

David found refuge in God because he had a repentant heart.

God is a righteous judge and a saving shield (vs. 10-11). Come to the LORD in repentance and ask Him to show you unconfessed sin. Ask Him to forgive you then pray Psalm 7:1, 10, and 17 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“O LORD my God, in You ________ and I have taken refuge.
Please save us from all those who pursue us, and deliver us.
Our shield is with You, God.  Make us upright in heart and save us.
We give thanks to You, LORD, according to Your righteousness.
We will sing praise to Your name, LORD Most High.
Because Your name is Jesus~”

Psalm 6 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 6.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/6/1/s_484001
Meditate on verse 9.

The LORD has heard my supplication.
The LORD receives my prayer.

David was having a difficult time when he wrote Psalm 6. He admitted that the LORD was rebuking and chastening him. His soul and body were dismayed. He was deeply grieved. Adversaries and enemies were bothering him.
In the midst of his distress, David called on God to save him because of His lovingkindness. David knew his own merits could not save him. Only if God chose to give David His unmerited lovingkindness and grace, would David be saved from his distressful situation exacerbated by sin.
What is happening in your life? Is the LORD reprimanding and correcting you? Come humbly to the LORD in repentance; you can be confident that He hears and receives your prayers.
Pray Psalm 6:2 and 4 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“LORD, be gracious to ________ and me, for we are pining away.
Heal us, O LORD, for our bones are dismayed.
 Return, O LORD, rescue our soul;
save us because of Your lovingkindness.
For the sake of Your name, Jesus~”

Psalm 5 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 5.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/5/1/s_483001
Meditate on verse 3.

In the morning, O LORD, You will hear my voice;
in the morning, I will order my prayer to You and eagerly watch.

David had an intimate relationship with the LORD, so he talked to God and confidently waited for His response to troubling issues.
As you read through Psalms, you may want to make a list of what you learn about God. Knowing God increases your faith and makes you like David, able to talk to Him about everything.
Notice God’s attitude toward wickedness in Psalm 5:4-6:
1.     God does not take pleasure in wickedness.
2.     No evil dwells with the LORD.
3.     The boastful will not stand before God’s eyes.
4.     The LORD hates all who do iniquity.
5.     God destroys those who speak falsehood.
6.     The LORD abhors the man of bloodshed and deceit.

Do any of these attributes and actions of God surprise you? What is your response to Him? Notice how David responded—he came into God’s presence and bowed in reverence to Him (v. 7). He knew God hated evil, so David asked the LORD to lead him in righteousness (v. 8).
Pray Psalm 5:11-12 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“LORD, ________ and I take refuge in You; let us be glad.
Let us ever sing for joy.  Shelter us, LORD!
We love Your name; may we exult in You.
You bless the righteous person, O LORD.
Surround us with Your favor as with a shield.
In Your name, Jesus~”

Psalm 4 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 4.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/4/1/s_482001
Meditate on verse 3.

But know that the LORD has set apart the Godly man for Himself;
the LORD hears when I call to Him.

Psalm 4 is another psalm of David, and there is much to learn from this man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14).  When David was upset, he appealed to his righteous God, and God relieved him in the midst of his distress (v. 1).  David knew the LORD heard him when he called (v. 3).

Through David, God gives you six steps for handling times of adversity (vs. 4-5):

1.     Tremble in awe of God, not in fear of your situation.
2.     Do not sin.
3.     Meditate in your heart upon your bed.  When you lay awake at night, replace worries with the Word of God, perhaps speak a verse over yourself that you memorized as a child.
4.     Be still.
5.     Offer righteous sacrifices, such as the sacrifice of praise, even when times are tough (Hebrews 13:15).
6.     Trust in the LORD.

Pray Psalm 4:6-8 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“LORD, many are saying, ‘Who will show them any good?’
Lift up the light of Your countenance upon ________ and me!
Put gladness in our hearts, more than when their grain and new wine abound.
In peace, let us both lie down and sleep,
for You alone, O LORD, make us to dwell in safety.
In Your name, Jesus~”

Psalm 3 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 3.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/3/1/s_481001
Meditate on verses 2-3.

Many are saying of my soul,
“There is no deliverance for him in God.”
But You, O LORD, are a shield about me,
my glory and the One who lifts my head.

King David wrote Psalm 3 when his son Absalom turned the people against him and attempted to make himself the king of Israel (2 Samuel 15). God used the situation to make David humble and contrite, and when he climbed the Mount of Olives, David was a broken, weeping man. He spent the night there and awoke knowing the LORD would sustain him. David no longer feared the ten thousands of people who set themselves against him (vs. 3-6; 2 Samuel 15:25-30).
Perhaps this psalm describes a daunting situation you face. Trust the LORD to deliver you. Even if everyone and everything around you says the situation is hopeless, declare with confidence, “But You, O LORD, are a shield about me, my glory and the One who lifts my head” (v. 3).
Come humbly before the LORD and pray Psalm 3:7-8 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“Arise, O LORD; save _______ and me, O my God!
Smite all our enemies on the cheek;
shatter the teeth of the wicked.
Salvation belongs to You, LORD.
Let Your blessing be upon us, Your people.
For the sake of Your name, Jesus~”

Psalm 2 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 2.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/2/1/s_480001
Meditate on verse 11.

Worship the LORD with reverence
and rejoice with trembling.

Psalm 2 is a Messianic psalm. Notice the references to Jesus: His Anointed (v. 2), My King (v. 6), and My Son (v. 7, 12). Notice the contrasts in this psalm between the kings of the earth and the LORD’s King. The LORD laughs and scoffs at earthly kings who plot against Him (vs. 1-4).
Take comfort from this psalm. The world around you may be in an uproar, and the kings and rulers of the earth may think they are in charge, but the LORD has already installed King Jesus on His holy mountain (v. 6). The nations are His inheritance, and the earth is His possession.
The LORD warns kings and judges (v. 10) to show discernment and worship Him. It is a warning for all to heed accompanied by verses to pray.
Pray Psalm 2:10-12 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“LORD, let _______ and me show discernment and pay attention to Your warning.
Help us worship You with reverence and rejoice with trembling.
We give homage to You, Jesus.  We do not want You to become angry with us.
Do not let us perish in the way of Your wrath that will soon be kindled.
Bless us as we take refuge in You.
In Your name, Jesus~”
