Psalm 84 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 84.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/84/1/s_562001
Meditate on verse 1.

How lovely are Your dwelling places, O LORD of hosts!
Where are God’s dwelling places?
·      He dwells in Jerusalem forever (1 Chronicles 23:25).
·      He dwells in Zion (Psalm 9:11).
·      He dwells on high (Isaiah 33:5).
·      He dwells within the temple (Matthew 23:21).
·      He dwells in unapproachable light (1 Timothy 6:16).
·      The Spirit of God dwells in you! (Romans 8:9, 11; 1 Corinthians
3:16; 2 Timothy 1:14).

The psalmist longed to be where God was.  Meditate on the fact that if you are a Christian, you are always with God because He dwells inside of you.  And you are lovely because you are His dwelling place.  Live so others will want to be His dwelling place, too.

Pray Psalm 84:2b and 11-12 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“My heart and my flesh sing for joy to You, the living God!
LORD God, be a sun and shield to __________ and me.
Give us grace and glory; do not withhold any good
thing from us as we walk uprightly.
O LORD of hosts, bless us as we trust in You!

In Your name, Jesus~”

Psalm 83 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 83.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/83/1/s_561001
Meditate on verses 1-3.

O God, do not remain quiet; do not be
silent and, O God, do not be still.
For behold, Your enemies make an uproar,
and those who hate You have exalted themselves.
They make shrewd plans against Your people
and conspire together against Your treasured ones.

Approximately 3,000 years ago, Asaph listed all the enemies hoping to annihilate the nation of Israel so her name was no longer remembered (v. 4).  Asaph asked God to pursue and terrify Israel’s adversaries, shaming and humiliating them (vs. 15, 17). He hoped such dishonor would cause these wicked people to seek the name of the LORD (v. 16).
God protected Israel; she is still a nation today.  And interestingly, the descendants of those enemies are Israel’s current, modern day foes.  They still seek the extermination of this nation loved by God, and they desire to kill Christians, who are also God’s beloved.  Know with certainty, God will continue to protect Israel, and He also promises to protect you.
But the LORD is faithful, and He will strengthen
and protect you from the evil one.
—2 Thessalonians 3:3

Obey your LORD’s command to pray for your enemies (Luke 6:27-28) by appealing to Him with Psalm 83:1-3, 16, and 18 as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“O God, do not remain quiet; do not be
silent and, O God, do not be still!
For behold, Your enemies make an uproar,
and those who hate You have exalted themselves.
They make shrewd plans against Your people,
and conspire together against Your treasured ones.
Do what You need to do, even filling their
faces with dishonor, that they may seek
Your name, O LORD.  May they know that You
alone, whose name is the LORD, are
the Most High over all the earth.
In Your Most High name, Jesus~”

Psalm 82 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 82.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/82/1/s_560001
Meditate on verses 1 and 8.

God takes His stand in His own congregation;

He judges in the midst of the rulers.
Arise, O God, judge the earth!
For it is You who possesses all the nations.

This psalm begins and ends with God judging.  The verses in between address human judges, exhorting them to judge righteously and fairly.  The psalmist, Asaph, reminds these judges of their sacred trust to make Godly decisions like “sons of the Most High” (v. 6).  Asaph tells them not to let their godlike position to make such important decisions go to their heads because they are mere men and will die like men (v. 7).
These are important verses for those in the judiciary system.  Pray for those who sit in such authoritative positions to make Godly decisions and to literally be sons of the Most High through faith in Jesus Christ (John 1:12; Galatians 3:26).
As a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7), pray Psalm 82 over judges and rulers in your land.
“LORD, judge in the midst of our rulers.
Do not let our rulers judge unjustly
and show partiality to the wicked.

Let them vindicate the weak and fatherless
and do justice to the afflicted and destitute.
Help them rescue the weak and needy.
May they deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.
Make our rulers know and understand.
Let them not walk about in darkness, so that
the foundations of the earth are shaken.
LORD, let them truly be sons of the Most
High, through faith in You, Jesus.

Make them realize they will die like men

and fall like any one of the princes.

Arise, O God, judge the earth!

For it is You who possesses all the nations.

Because You are the Righteous Judge, Jesus~”

Psalm 81 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 81.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/81/1/s_559001
Meditate on verse 1.

Sing for joy to God our strength;
shout joyfully to the God of Jacob.

The LORD recalled what He did for Israel:
·      “I relieved his shoulder of the burden” (v. 6).

·      ”I rescued you” (v.7).
·      ”I answered you in the hiding place of thunder” (v. 7).
The LORD goes on to admonish Israel for not listening and obeying Him.  If they would walk in His ways, He “would quickly subdue their enemies” (v. 14).
What does the LORD say He has done for you?  Does He have a word of admonishment for you to stop having a stubborn heart?
Recall God’s faithfulness.  Commit to obey Him with your whole heart.
Pray Psalm 81:11-16 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, _________ and I are Your people.

Help us listen to and obey You.

Do not let us have a stubborn heart and
walk in our own devices.
Help us listen to You and walk in Your ways!

Please quickly subdue our enemies, and turn
Your hand against our adversaries.

LORD, we love You; do not let us pretend to obey You.

We do not want our time of punishment to be forever.
Please feed us with the finest of the wheat,

and satisfy us with honey from the rock.

In Your name, Jesus~”

Psalm 80 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 80.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/80/1/s_558001
Meditate on verses 3, 7, and 19.

O God, restore us and cause Your face to
shine upon us, and we will be saved.
O God of hosts, restore us and cause Your face
to shine upon us, and we will be saved.
O LORD God of hosts, restore us; cause Your
face to shine upon us, and we will be saved.

Asaph’s prayer request sounds the same in three of the verses, but each time he adds to the name of God; “O God, O God of hosts, O LORD God of hosts ...” (vs. 3, 7, 19).  You can hear the urgency as he calls on the LORD to save Israel.
Instead of Israel being fed with manna and water from the rock, God was feeding the people with the bread of tears in large measure (v. 5).  Asaph asked God how long He would be angry with the prayer of His people (v. 4).
Are you or someone you love in a season of God’s discipline and reproof?  Remember that God disciplines those He loves (Hebrews 12:6).  Call on the name of the LORD in repentance and trust.
Pray Psalm 80:17-19 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, let Your hand be upon and me.
Make us people of Your right hand, people whom
You have made strong for Yourself.  Do not let us
turn back from You; revive us, and we
will call upon Your name.
O LORD God of hosts, restore
us;
cause Your face to shine upon us, and we will be saved.
For the sake of Your name, Jesus~”

Psalm 79 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 79.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/79/1/s_557001
Meditate on verse 9.

Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Your name;
and deliver us and forgive our sins for Your name’s sake.

Jerusalem was in ruins and the temple defiled (v. 1).  Not buried properly, the dead were eaten by the birds (v. 2).  Asaph called on God to pour out His wrath on the godless nations that did those atrocities (vs. 6-7).  It is good to know you can be so honest with the LORD.
But notice the sudden change in Asaph’s prayer request.  In the middle of his prayer, Asaph did a sin check.  Was the LORD allowing such devastation to punish the people for their sins?  Asaph’s prayer changed from “Get them, God!” to “O LORD, forgive us.”
Ask God to check you for unconfessed sins, then pray the prayer of confession in Psalm 79:8-9 and 13 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, do not remember the iniquities

of ___________ and me against us.

Let Your compassion come quickly to meet us,

for we are brought very low.

Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Your name.
Deliver us and forgive our sins for Your name’s sake.

We are Your people and the sheep of Your pasture.

We will give thanks to You forever; to all
generations we will tell of Your praise.

For the glory of Your name, Jesus~”

Psalm 78 - Praying God's Word

Please read Psalm 78.
www.blueletterbible.org/nasb/psa/78/1/s_556001
Meditate on verse 4.

We will not conceal them from their children,
but tell to the generation to come the praises of the LORD,
and His strength and His wondrous works that He has done.

Thankfully Asaph did not conceal God’s wondrous works.  He gave additional insight into the miracles God did for Israel.  For example, Moses recorded that God brought water from the rock (Exodus 17:6).  Asaph described that God “gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths and caused waters to run down like rivers” (vs. 15-16).
As the waters gushed and overflowed, the people questioned God’s ability to give them bread and meat (v. 20).  Their behavior was ungratefully rude toward God.
Do you ever whine and complain in the midst of the LORD’s gushing blessings in your life?  The LORD was full of wrath against Israel for their unbelief (vs. 21-22). Take heed not to repeat their sinful behavior.
Pray Psalm 78:4-8 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).
“LORD, do not let _______ and me conceal
 these truths from our children.
Let us tell the generation to come Your praises,
Your strength, and the wondrous works You have done.
Let us teach Your commandments to our children,
so the generation to come might know,
even the children yet to be born,
that they may arise and tell them to their children.
Let us put our confidence in You, God, and
not forget Your works, but keep Your commandments.
Do not let us be a stubborn and rebellious generation.
Make us a generation that prepares its heart
and whose spirit is faithful to You, God.
Because of Your name, Jesus~”
