Proverbs 10 - Praying God's Word

Meditate on verses 11-13.

The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,

but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.

Hatred stirs up strife,

but love covers all transgressions.

On the lips of the discerning, wisdom is found,

but a rod is for the back of him who lacks understanding.

Chapter 10 begins a series of proverbs that are usually singular verses. These are stand-alone truths that make each chapter a jewelry store (or perhaps a hardware store for the men) of prayers you can say for your loved ones. Imagine as a watchman on the wall, you get to go into the weapon room and select whatever you need for protecting and changing the lives of others as you purposely pray for them.

By now you should be able to pray on your own, but if you are picking up this prayer guide later in the year, this is how it works.

For example, verse 1 says:

A wise son makes a father glad, but a foolish son is a grief to his mother.

As a watchman you may know both of these sons in someone’s household.  You pray,

Part 1

“LORD, thank you for making _________ a wise son. 

Please help him continue to make his father glad.  

May he never bring grief to his mother.”

Part 2 

“Please make  ________ a wise son who makes his father glad.

 Let him stop being foolish and a grief to his mother.”

Pray Proverbs 10:11-13 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“LORD, give ___________ and me the mouth of the righteous

 in order to be a fountain of life. 

Do not let us conceal violence.  Let us not be hateful, stirring up strife. 

In love, let us cover transgressions. 

Make us discerning, so wisdom will be found on our lips.

 Give us understanding, so we will not need the rod of correction.
