Exodus 16 - Praying God's Word

Meditate on this statement from verse 8.

 

This will happen when the LORD

gives you meat to eat in the evening

and bread to the full in the morning,

for the LORD hears your grumblings

which you grumble against Him.

 

There are two repeated words in Exodus 16: grumbling and gathering.  Exactly one month passed since the Israelites saw the LORD destroy Pharaoh’s army on their behalf.  They sang a song of praise, but their gratitude quickly turned to grumbling when they romanticized their past because their present had hit a rough spot.  Again, God miraculously met their needs, commanding them to gather His daily blessings of manna and quail.  Gathering is a good remedy for grumbling.

Examine your life.  Are you a grumbler or a gatherer?  The LORD promises to “supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).  Instead of grumbling, gather God’s daily provisions.  Start by daily gathering from His Word and talking to Him continuously throughout the day.  As you gather God’s blessings, let your grumbling become words of gratitude to your generous LORD.

Pray Exodus 16:12 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

 

“LORD, I know You hear the grumblings of _________ and me. 

LORD, forgive us.   At twilight let us eat what You provide,

 and in the morning, let us be filled with Your bread.

  May we know that You are the LORD our God.

In Your name, Jesus, our Bread of Life~” (John 6)

Exodus 15 - Praying God's Word

Meditate on verses 2-3.

 

The LORD is my strength and song,

and He has become my salvation;

 this is my God, and I will praise Him;

My father’s God, and I will extol Him. 

The LORD is a warrior; the LORD is His name.

 

Carefully observe God in Exodus 15.  He is:

1.     highly exalted (v. 1)

2.     your strength, your song, and your salvation (v. 2)

3.     a warrior (v. 3)

4.     majestic in power, shattering the enemy with His right hand (v. 6)

5.     overthrowing those who rise up against Him in the greatness of His excellence (v. 7)

6.     majestic in holiness; awesome in praise; working wonders (v. 11)

7.     leading His redeemed people in lovingkindness and guiding them in His strength to His holy habitation (v. 13)

8.     causing those He purchased to be planted in the mountain of His inheritance (vs. 16-17)

9.     reigning forever and ever (v. 18)

10. the LORD, your healer (v. 26)

 

Remember these truths when you are tempted to grumble against the LORD like the Israelites did at Marah.  Memorize at least one of the actions and attributes of your LORD and meditate on Him all day. 

 

Pray Exodus 15:26 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

 

“LORD our God, help _________ and me give earnest

 heed to Your voice.  Let us do what is right in Your sight

 and give ear to Your commandments and keep all Your statutes.

 LORD, You are our healer; keep us from sin sickness.

Exodus 14 - Praying God's Word

Meditate on verses 13a and 14.

 

Do not fear!  Stand by and see the salvation of the LORD

which He will accomplish for you today.

The LORD will fight for you while you keep silent.

 

The Israelites boldly left Egypt, but their confidence quickly turned to fear as the Egyptians had a change of heart and chased after them.

Can you relate to the Israelites?  Have you ever been delivered by the LORD from a difficult situation?  You feel confident, “going out boldly” (v. 8); when suddenly, another attack comes from the enemy, and your confidence quickly dissolves into gut-wrenching fear.

“The LORD will fight for you while you keep silent” (v. 14).  God wants you to let Him fight for you, so He will get the credit and the glory for the victory in your life. Notice the response of the professional Egyptian warriors when the Israelites let the LORD do their fighting:

He caused their chariot wheels to swerve, and

He made them drive with difficulty;

 so the Egyptians said, “Let us flee from Israel,

for the LORD is fighting for them against the Egyptians.”

Pray Exodus 14:13-14 over yourself and others in fearful situations as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

 

“LORD, help _________ and me not to fear!

Let us stand by and see the salvation You

will accomplish for us today.

LORD, fight for us!  Help us to keep

 silent as we watch You do it.

Exodus 13 - Praying God's Word

Meditate on verse 8.

 

You shall tell your son on that day, saying,

“It is because of what the LORD did

 for me when I came out of Egypt.”

 

The salvation story continues in Exodus 13.  The day after eating the Passover lamb, the Israelites removed anything with leaven (yeast) from their midst.  Paul explained the symbolism behind this Feast of Unleavened Bread in 1 Corinthians 5:6-8:

  Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the

whole lump of dough?  Clean out the old leaven so

 that you may be a new lump, just as

you are in fact unleavened. 

For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.

 Therefore, let us celebrate the feast, not with old

leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness,

 but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

 

Before becoming a Christian, you were enslaved to sin.  When you chose the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, He took away your sins, freeing you from enslavement to them. God’s glorious freedom in Christ lets you remove leaven (sin) from your life as you wholeheartedly live for Him.

Pray Exodus 13:7-8 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

 

“LORD, do not let any leaven

(sin) be seen among ________ and me.

Let us tell others we are getting rid of sin

because of what You did for us

 when You brought us out of slavery to sin. 

Because of You, our Passover Lamb, Jesus~”

Exodus 12 - Praying God's Word

Meditate on verses 13 and 1 Corinthians 5:7.

 

The blood shall be a sign for you

on the houses where you live;

 and when I see the blood, I will pass over you,

and no plague will befall you to destroy you

 when I strike the land of Egypt.

 

For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.

 

Exodus 12 is the picture of salvation from sin through the sacrifice of Jesus.  People are enslaved to sin like the Israelites were enslaved to the Egyptians.  Jesus, the Passover Lamb, came into Jerusalem on the day the Jewish people were choosing their lambs (John 12:12-15).  Five days later when the lambs were slain, Jesus, the Lamb of God, cried with His last breath, “It is finished!” (John 1:29; 19:30).

Now in Christ Jesus, you who formerly

 were far off have been brought near

by the blood of Christ, sprinkled with

His blood, redeemed with precious blood, as of

 a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. 

­—Ephesians 2:13; 1 Peter 1:2b, 18b, 19

 

Just as He did over the Jews, the LORD will pass over you when He returns in judgment, if He sees the blood of the Lamb covering you.

Pray Exodus 12:23 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

 

“LORD, when You pass through to smite those

who do not know You, thank You that You will see Your blood

on the lives of ____________ and me.  LORD, pass over us and do

 not allow the destroyer to come into our homes to smite us. 

Because of Your blood, Jesus~”

Exodus 11 - Praying God's Word

Meditate on verses 6-7.

 

Moreover, there shall be a great cry in all the land of Egypt,

 such as there has not been before and such as shall never be again.

 But against any of the sons of Israel a dog will not even bark,

whether against man or beast, that you may understand

 how the LORD makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.

 

The LORD makes distinctions.  The Hebrew word, palah, translated as “distinction” in Exodus 11:7 is used in Psalm 4:3:

 

But know that the LORD has set

apart the Godly man for Himself;

the LORD hears when I call to Him.

 

God sets apart and distinguishes those who belong to Him.  The distinction God made between Egypt and Israel was obvious by death for the Egyptians and life for the Israelites.  Tomorrow’s devotional will teach what the LORD required of the Israelites to be given that life distinction as children of God.

It is eternally important for you to be distinguished as belonging to the LORD.  Has the LORD set you apart for Himself?  Are you a person of distinction because you belong to Christ?

Pray Exodus 11:3 and 7 over yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

 

“LORD, give _________ and me favor in Your sight

 and in the sight of others.

Let us be greatly esteemed where You put us.

Make a distinction between the world and us.

Because of Your name, Jesus~”

Exodus 10 - Praying God's Word

Meditate on this question from verse 3.

 

Thus says the LORD,  “How long will you

 refuse to humble yourself before Me?”

 

By chapter 10 of Exodus, Pharaoh’s refusal to humble himself before God resulted in:

 

·      dead fish

·      foul drinking water

·      frogs in beds and bowls and heaps of dead frogs

·      dust that became gnats throughout all the land

·      houses swarming with insects

·      horses, donkeys, camels, herds, and flocks dead from severe pestilence

·      boils on animals and people

·      hail that killed every man, beast, and plant left in the fields

·      tree eating locusts and houses filled with locusts

·      three days of darkness so dark it could be felt

 

Pharaoh did not submit to God, resulting in misery, darkness, and death to countless plants, animals, and people.  Now examine yourself and the situations going on around you.  How would others describe you?  Are you a prideful person who brings darkness and misery to others?  Or, are you a humble follower of Jesus who brings light and life to others?

Using the words from Exodus 10:1-3, pray for yourself and those for whom you stand guard as a faithful, prayerful watchman (Isaiah 62:6-7).

 

“LORD, do not let ________ and my heart be hardened.

Help us tell our children and grandchildren

about the signs You perform among us

that we may know You are the LORD.

 May we not refuse to humble ourselves before You.

Because You are LORD Jesus~”
